The Dogecoin Foundation is experimenting with offline doge transactions through the Starlink satellite network.
Two prominent Dogecoin Foundation staff members recently authored an essay on leveraging RadioDoge technology in conjunction with the Starlink satellite network to execute DOGE transactions without the need of the Internet.
The researchers acknowledged that there is still more work to be done, but the framework for future studies has been built. This entailed establishing a connection between RadioDoge and the Dogecoin testnet using Starlink’s technical assistance.
Timothy Stebbing, the Dogecoin Foundation’s Product Lead, and Michi Lumin, the Foundation’s Principal Engineer, collaborated on a new communication network that would enable users to trade Dogecoin offline. It will just need the assistance of the Starlink satellite network, which was established and is owned by the world’s wealthiest Doge fan, Elon Musk.
According to the report, the key is RadioDoge, a “cheap and dependable radio technology (HF/LoRaWAN)” that works in conjunction with the Starlink satellite network to provide access to individuals who lack Internet connection.
The second critical component is the GigaWallet project, which is developing a plug-and-play solution (a new kind of Doge wallet) enabling internet-based transactions through standardised, non-custodial wallet connection with the Dogecoin network.
The two developers saw the first sentence of Libdogecoin, a programming library or set of building blocks for developing Dogecoin applications, as the foundation for generating and verifying Dogecoin addresses and transactions. They confirmed that Dogecoin addresses established using the library received DOGE on the main network correctly.
A Long Road Ahead
The primary roadblock to allowing GigaWallet to interface with RadioDoge, as indicated by the developers, is determining if Libdogecoin can do the heavy lifting. The first RadioDoge, which was constructed last week, will serve as a demonstration site for the new technology.
The team said that the first transactions using Libdogecoin should occur this week when it is transferred to RadioDoge, which will send it to the Dogecoin testnet via a Starlink satellite.
The two think the new technology has the potential to significantly boost Dogecoin’s grass-roots acceptance in developing markets, thereby making the Musk-backed cryptocurrency “the de facto way of trading goods and services internationally.” They did disclose, however, that the initial phase of Libdogecoin accounted for just 0.1 of the project’s milestones.
