As of this morning, shared infrastructure from Infura has a significant influence on decentralised applications and services.
Users of popular Ethereum wallet MetaMask and other dapps built on the top smart-contract blockchain network may believe that Ethereum is down this morning, but this is not the case. Ethereum-based applications and services are being affected by an outage at the infrastructure provider Infura, which is extensively utilised by developers and businesses.
Users started reporting troubles with Ethereum apps, notably MetaMask, which has over 30 million monthly users, early this morning.
Since the last status report at 13:43 UTC, the infrastructure provider has discovered problems with several of its APIs, which link applications and services to the Ethereum blockchain. APIs for Ethereum, scaling solutions such as Polygon, Optimism, Arbitrum, Filecoin, and the NFT protocol Palm were also impacted.
Infura said that it was in the process of implementing a solution as of 15:08 UTC. As of this time, we are working on a repair and our core systems are beginning to recover,” the status page states. There are still components that need to come back up before we can resume full-service operation.
An Infura official told Decrypt, “Unfortunately we don’t have any further facts to provide at this stage as our engineers are hard at work on a remedy,” when requested for comment or more information.

As a major platform for decentralised applications (dapps), NFT trading, and Defi (a sort of peer-to-peer lending of crypto assets), Ethereum depends heavily on a shared infrastructure.
This is why a service like Infura’s downtime may have a significant effect on many of the most popular Ethereum applications and services. In November of 2020, Infura had what it called the “worst serious service disruption in our four years of existence.”
