Sean “Diddy” Combs and Sam Bankman-Fried are currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where federal investigators have organized an operation.

The Bureau of Prisons, the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General, and other law enforcement agencies conducted the “interagency operation,” as part of ongoing efforts to address persistent issues at the facility, according to officials.

To guarantee the safety of both the incarcerated population and the staff, the Bureau of Prisons announced that the operation was underway. Officials declined to disclose the operation’s nature or scope, citing operational integrity and safety. BOP reiterated that the operation was premeditated and that the facility was not under any active threat.

In the wake of reports of pervasive violence, degraded conditions, and detainee fatalities, the Bankman-Fried prison, the sole federal detention center in New York City, has been the subject of increasing cries for reform. The Justice Department and Bureau of Prisons have advocated for systemic reforms to address the underlying causes of these issues and to penalize the perpetrators.

Last month, federal prosecutors charged nine inmates with involvement in violent incidents from April to August. These incidents included two fatal stabbings and a grievous spinal injury caused by a homemade weapon.

Detainee Complaints Reveal Broad Issues at Brooklyn Jail Bankman-Fried penitentiary, situated on the Brooklyn waterfront, has a detention capacity of approximately 1,200 individuals, the majority of whom are awaiting trial in Manhattan or Brooklyn federal courts. This is in contrast to the 1,600 individuals tallied in January, as the facility is currently operating under the influence of pervasive personnel shortages, reports of contraband smuggling, and suspected employee involvement in illicit schemes.

The complaints of detainees include a complete lack of visitation and exercise, a flagrant deficiency in access to fundamental facilities and services, and highly protracted lockdowns. These exacerbate tension for both personnel and detainees.
