While Musk resigned from the board of OpenAI in 2018, the introduction of his new AI venture will position him alongside Google and Microsoft in the race to develop next-generation AI.

Elon Musk is reportedly devising plans to create an artificial intelligence (AI) startup to compete with OpenAI, which he co-founded in 2015 and is one of the most prominent generative AI companies.

The revelation was made after the Financial Times (FT) reported that Musk is assembling a team of AI researchers and engineers. While Musk departed the board of OpenAI in 2018, the introduction of his new AI venture will position him alongside Google and Microsoft in the race to develop next-generation AI.

According to the story, Musk is now discussing potential investments in the new AI firm with current SpaceX and Tesla investors. “Many people are investing in it… it’s real and they’re excited about it,” said a source for the FT.

The alleged findings complement a recent report from April 12 in which an anonymous source disclosed that Musk purchased nearly 10,000 graphics processing units to fuel Twitter’s artificial intelligence initiatives.

In addition, Musk altered the name of Twitter in company filings to “X Corp” as part of his plans to establish an “everything app” under the “X” brand.

In contrast, on March 30, Musk and more than 2,600 tech leaders and researchers signed an open letter imploring a temporary halt to AI development due to “grave risks to society and humanity.”

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is yet another tech titan entering the AI sweepstakes. Amazon Bedrock will enable AWS users to construct generative AI from foundation models.
