Cosmos’ Interchain Foundation made Evmos open source as a native EVM framework for its ecosystem. EVM becomes official Interchain software, included in the Cosmos SDK.
Cosmos’ Interchain Foundation funded the open-sourcing of Evmos, the canonical EVM framework for its multichain ecosystem of over 200 appchains.
The framework, previously under the Evmos project, will now be maintained as “Cosmos EVM” within the official Interchain software, like Cosmos SDK, the foundation stated.
This standardizes the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) for the Cosmos ecosystem.
Cosmos blockchains can now use Cosmos EVM for full EVM compatibility.
This includes JSON-RPC support and Ethereum wallet compatibility through a simple EVM configuration for native ERC-20 tokens.
EVM Now Part of Official Interchain Stack
This integration increases cross-chain interoperability between EVM and Cosmos ecosystems, notably through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol.
Co-founder Federico Kunze Küllmer will step down as an Evmos core contributor.
He will advise the Interchain Foundation on Cosmos EVM’s interoperability and modular architecture, the project noted.
Kunze Küllmer’s firm, Altiplanic, Evmos codebase, is a core contributor to the Evmos codebase and will stop project contributions.
The Evmos token price decreased over 30% in the last 24 hours, according to The Block’s price page.
Evmos, initially conceived as Ethermint in 2016, launched on the mainnet in 2022 as a Cosmos-based chain to bring EVM to Cosmos.
Developers raised $27 million in a token sale round led by Polychain Capital in 2022.
Since the 2020s started, EVM has become the most adopted smart contract standard across blockchains, aiming for Ethereum’s adoption levels.
