Hackers get into 8,000,000 smartphones and use “SpyLoan” to steal sensitive information and empty bank accounts for funds
McAfee, a cybersecurity firm, has reported a “substantial global increase” in the prevalence of a smartphone breach that results in extortion, harassment, and the depletion of bank accounts.
McAfee reports that hackers are deploying a group of pernicious financial apps that contain “SpyLoan” malware at an accelerated rate, posing a significant threat with over eight million active installations worldwide.
The applications are available on Google Play and feature the names, logos, brand colors, and interfaces of prominent financial institutions.
Users are required to provide sensitive personal information and documents after the installation is complete.
“Users are required to submit sensitive personal information, banking accounts, employee information, and legal identification documents, as well as device data that is extracted from the victim’s device.”
The predatory loan apps’ privacy policies are comprehensive, necessitating that users grant access to data including text messages, call records, and contact addresses. According to McAfee, the information is occasionally employed as a means of enforcing loan repayment.
Users of predatory loans are reportedly encountering numerous instances of privacy violations, according to the organization.
Malicious applications provide predatory loans that are extraordinarily costly, and the loan terms are opaque.
“High Interest Rates and Hidden Fees: Users are obligated to repay the full loan amount, as well as exorbitant fees, within a brief period, despite receiving less than the loan amount they were promised.”
McAfee advises individuals to closely monitor their phone’s permissions, verify the legitimacy of applications, and submit any suspicious activity to authorities or app stores in order to ensure their safety.
Predatory loan applications are most prevalent in Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia, with India, Mexico, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Kenya, Colombia, Vietnam, Chile, and Nigeria being the most severely affected.
