Mysten Labs, the developer of the Sui blockchain, has disclosed its intention to offer its transportable gaming device, SuiPlay0X1, in the first half of 2025.

According to a recent press release, the company commenced the process of accepting preorders for the device, which is priced at $599, on September 3.

The SuiPlay0X1 will facilitate the integration of blockchain technology into the gaming industry by supporting both traditional PC games and titles established on the Sui blockchain. This represents a substantial advancement.

Mysten Labs co-founder Adeniyi Abiodun underscored that consumers prioritize gameplay over the technology that underpins it.

He emphasized that the SuiPlay0X1 is designed to offer a seamless gaming experience, with blockchain integration augmenting player ownership without disrupting the enjoyment.

According to Abiodun, the device will illustrate how blockchain-powered games can resemble traditional “Web2” games in terms of appearance and user experience, thereby providing participants with a more immersive experience.

The SuiPlay0X1 will have an integrated graphics processing unit and weigh 677 grams. It will operate on Playtron GameOS, a Linux-based operating system that is capable of managing AAA PC titles without the need for modifications.

XOCIETY, a third-person shooter, and DARKTIMES, a medieval combat, are among the blockchain-based titles that are currently in development for the device.

Mysten Labs, which was established in 2021 by former Meta crypto executives, initially disclosed its development of a transportable gaming device at the Sui Basecamp event in Paris earlier this year.

Mysten Labs has joined the ranks of other companies that provide non-Web3 transportable gaming PCs, including Valve’s Steam Deck and Asus’s ROG Ally X, with this announcement.

Omdia’s research indicates that 19.3 million handheld gaming devices were sold globally in 2023, and sales are anticipated to increase to 29.3 million by 2028.

Within 12 hours of the preorder launch, more than 1,000 units had been ordered for the SuiPlay0X1. Preorders can be placed using Sui (SUI), Ether, or Solana.

Amitt Mahajan, CEO of Proof of Play, is predicting a significant increase in the use of dedicated blockchains for gaming applications, as previously reported.

Mahajan, who was previously responsible for the development of the widely popular Facebook game Farmville, envisions a future in which thousands of individual blockchains support specific applications.

He regards blockchain technology as a sophisticated database and maintains that the utilization of chains as data storage is indispensable for the expansion of applications.

Pirate Nation is not the only entity to adopt the trend of dedicated blockchains for gaming. Other games on networks such as Avalanche are employing their own dedicated subnets, including Shrapnel and Off the Grid with its GUNZ network.
