The 2022 OpenSea email service provider compromise has resulted in the complete online exposure of more than seven million email addresses.
The breach of data contains information about prominent figures in the crypto ecosystem, including CZ of Binance, and has prompted apprehensions regarding the proliferation of fraudulent activities.
One of the contractors of the OpenSea email service provider, Customer.io was involved in the initial incident, which was reported on June 29, 2022. The contractor illicitly accessed and sold email addresses from current and former users to a third party.
At that time, OpenSea cautioned its consumers to exercise caution in order to avoid potential frauds. Nevertheless, recent developments indicate that the disclosed database has disseminated in all directions, resulting in the complete disclosure of sensitive information.
OpenSea subsequently corroborated the breach of the email service provider at OpenSea following the disclosure of the Chief Information Security Officer at SlowMist, who is known online as @im23pds. This carries a significant risk, as the private information that these malicious entities possess could potentially expose millions of users to phishing attacks and other forms of cyber-attacks.
SlowMist urged the affected individuals to implement rigorous cybersecurity measures, such as the use of strong, unique passwords and the storage of these passwords in a password manager, in order to mitigate threats.
