OP Erigon, an adapted variant of Ethereum’s Erigon client software, has been released by Test in Prod.
A contributor to the Optimism blockchain, Test in Prod, has released OP Erigon, a variant of the Erigon client software adapted from Ethereum’s mainnet execution layer, as the drive for numerous client software within blockchains continues.
The client, which was announced in a blog post yesterday, is expected to work in tandem with “OP-Geth,” another client software developed specifically for Optimism.
A client is an application that enables user interaction with a blockchain network by validating transactions and maintaining a local copy of the network. The release of OP Erigon, which is still in testing, contributes to the Optimism blockchain’s “client diversity” initiatives. The launch of OP Erigon occurred one day after venture capital behemoth Andreessen Horowitz introduced Magi, its own consensus client for Optimism.
Optimism is an Optimistic rollup, a type of Layer 2 scalability solution intended to increase the throughput and efficacy of Ethereum (or other blockchain networks) by executing computations off-chain and submitting only the results to the main chain.
The Optimism ecosystem is built to support numerous clients on the Layer 2 network, as well as other chains like Coinbase-backed Base. Contributors to optimism stress that client diversity can enhance the network’s overall resilience.
Similar to Ethereum’s mainnet, Optimism’s software architecture, known as the OP Stack, permits the network to divide into a consensus layer responsible for attaining consensus and an execution layer designated for smart contracts. This modular approach to software design enables a more flexible network infrastructure for Optimism ecosystem developers.
