The postal office of the self-governing region of the Faroe Islands has issued a new set of NFT collector stamps.

The Faroe Islands have released a new set of digital “crypto stamps,” the equivalent of which may be found on the blockchain as a nonfungible token (NFT) but can be used as mail.

The Faroe Islands’ autonomous territory published its first series of crypto stamps named Stamps of Maybe in conjunction with VariusSystems on June 23, according to the website for issuing postage, Posta Faroe Islands.

To increase the value of each stamp, the Postal Service claims that a digital copy of each stamp is kept on a blockchain where users may vote on the design of the stamp.

CEO of VariusSystems Michael Dorner, recently attended a symposium at the United Nations hosted by the Universal Postal Union, where he saw that governments throughout the globe are interested in new use cases of developing technology.

The digital versions of stamps from the Faroe Islands’ collection are affected by the current weather conditions based on data from the nearby Faroese meteorological station, Veurstova Froya, at the moment of activation.

Philately, the hobby of collecting stamps, has been reinvented before, but this is the first time blockchain technology has been used by a postal agency to generate stamps as NFTs.

PostNL of the Netherlands and PostAG of Austria has released NFT crypto stamp versions. The first PostAGs became life in 2019 on the Ethereum blockchain, and another version with near-field communication chip features for further verification will be released in 2021.
