Eclipse claims that it is the first Layer 2 network on Ethereum to employ the Solana VirtuaQl Machine.

Eclipse, an Ethereum Layer 2 network that employs the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM), has initiated its mainnet for developers.

“In the weeks ahead, we are inviting builders to participate in our hackathon, the Total Eclipse Challenge, and deploy on Eclipse Mainnet,” Eclipse Labs stated in a blog post.

Eclipse states that it is the first Layer 2 network on Ethereum to utilize the SVM. Eclipse incorporates a variety of technologies, including the SVM for transaction execution, Celestia for data availability, and RISC Zero for zero-knowledge fraud proofs. The objective of this merging is to provide the advantages of Ethereum’s security and Solana’s high transaction throughput.

Ethereum’s Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is a computing engine that executes smart contracts, thereby allowing developers to construct decentralized applications (dApps) on the Ethereum network. In a sequential manner, it processes transactions one at a time.

Developers may commence by consulting Eclipse’s documentation, which comprises instructions for connecting ETH to Eclipse and RPC access. At present, the bridge lacks a user interface, and developers are advised to send only ETH to the bridge.

Eclipse is conducting the Total Eclipse Challenge hackathon from August 7 to August 21 as part of the launch.

Eclipse stated that it is striving to become the most efficient Layer 2 network on Ethereum. The current mainnet phase is devoid of specific security features, including fraud substantiation and withdrawals, and includes a centralized bridge. The relay operator and the sequencer are among the system components that users must have confidence in. The project intends to resolve these concerns in forthcoming revisions, with the objective of transitioning to a more decentralized Stage 1 roll-up.

The subsequent phase will entail the public inauguration of the mainnet, which will include the addition of new features such as withdrawals. Uncertainties regarding an airdrop persist. Eclipse Labs raised $50 million in March in anticipation of its mainnet debut.
