Kamala Harris Hires Binance Consultants

Harris has appointed David Plouffe, a Binance alumni, and Brian Nelson, a former Treasury Department official, as his advisors.

Although recent appointments suggest a potential shift toward a more favorable approach, Kamala Harris’ stance on crypto remains ambiguous as she campaigns for the presidency in the wake of President Joe Biden’s decision not to run.

According to a report by Reuters on Friday, Harris has appointed David Plouffe, a former Obama aide and former member of the Binance Global Advisory Board, as her senior adviser for strategy.

Before transitioning to Harris’ team last week, Plouffe had been serving as a global strategic advisor for Alchemy Pay, where he made contributions to the company’s strategy, compliance, and government relations.

Axios reported last month that Harris has also recruited Brian Nelson, the former undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence at the U.S. Treasury Department.

The Treasury’s actions against Binance for alleged money laundering and sanctions violations in November of last year involved Nelson.

Nelson’s interaction with the industry has been characterized as open-minded and centered on the regulation of illicit activities without impeding innovation, despite this.

In response to a tweet by Bitwise chief investment officer Matt Hougan, Cody Carbone, chief policy officer of blockchain trade association Digital Chamber, stated, “Nelson has collaborated with [Harris] for years.”

Carbone stated, “He has maintained an open-minded perspective regarding cryptocurrency, and his policy team has exceeded expectations in terms of industry engagement.” “He is profoundly concerned about the use of illicit finance, but he has not depicted cryptocurrency as a poison, as some have.”
