The creator of Cardano chose to stay out of the Web Summit dispute.

The creator of Web Summit, one of the biggest fintech conferences in the world, has caused a stir with some of his controversial statements. Over 70,000 people were planned to attend, however many have dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, including Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson.

Charles Hoskinson indicated on Friday, October 20 that he will not be attending the Web Summit in Lisbon, as a result of the issue surrounding Paddy Cosgrave’s political views on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Hoskinson didn’t pull any punches when he voiced his worries about the event becoming politicized. The Cardano founder had planned to discuss synthetic biology and highlight novel ideas and experiences, but the meeting has taken an unexpectedly negative turn.

Hoskinson said he will give a five-hour online AMA session shortly in an effort to appease the hundreds of attendees who were awaiting the Cardano Founder.

Paddy Cosgrave’s labeling of Israel’s reaction to the Hamas-led strike on October 7 as “war crimes” ratcheted up the tensions surrounding the tragedy. Investors and startup entrepreneurs declared a boycott of the event in response to what they saw as a “Pro Hamas” posture, even before Cosgrave had a chance to explain his views.

Paddy Cosgrave made an apology after receiving reaction, in which he condemned the assault and offered condolences to the families of the victims and innocent people who had died in the war. He said Israel has the right to defend itself and exist, but that it must do so in accordance with international law and the Geneva Conventions.

Despite Cosgrave’s explanation and apologies, many in the community continued to distance themselves from the incident.
