Holli aims to enhance the testing environment and resolve ETH supply issues on testnets.

Tim Beiko of the Ethereum Foundation said that the Ethereum core developers are building a new testnet dubbed Holli in response to difficulty in purchasing ETH on the blockchain’s principal test networks.

The anticipated introduction of Holli later this year may enhance the testing environment for client and application developers and node administrators. It intends to address issues connected with purchasing ETH on Ethereum test networks, notably Goerli.

Test networks (or testnets) are clone blockchains used for experimentation, enabling developers to launch apps and test for flaws before uploading them to the mainnet. Today, Goerli and Sepolia are the two leading testnets in the Ethereum ecosystem.

Goerli is a crucial network since it is the first native multi-client testnet that validators utilize extensively. Beiko said that Goerli’s approach to distributing native ETH (GoETH) has been judged “less stable.” The distribution of GoETH is mostly controlled by a handful of validator firms. They transfer a tiny amount of GoETH through “faucets” to Twitter users who pass a verification check, raising privacy and time usage issues.

The inventors of the interoperability protocol Layer Zero have just developed a cross-chain liquidity pool that enables users to purchase GoETH. Although this market aims to assuage developer qualms about obtaining GoETH, many believe it might compromise the testnet’s independence.

The second testnet, Sepolia, sought to solve the supply problem with a design that allowed test validators to mint Sepolia-ETH freely (SepETH). Nevertheless, Sepolia is not accessible to permissionless validators, therefore its supply may be hoarded by a small number of organizations. Beiko and other core developers have thus recommended establishing Holli as a new testnet to alleviate supply difficulties and create a more conducive environment for developers and validators.

To make Holli-ETH more available to application developers, Beiko has proposed automatic allocations to the addresses of all developers who have ever implemented smart contracts on the Ethereum testnets or mainnet.
