In a speech kicking off Bitcoin 2022, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez urged for the election of pro-bitcoin leaders.

“The next US president must be a pro-bitcoin candidate,” Suarez said. Suarez quipped that he would run for president in the future.

“I thought, ‘How can I go larger,’ and I figured I could declare that I’m running for….Nah, not this year,” Suarez said.

Suarez said, however, that he wanted to express a “vision for the nation” in relation to cryptocurrency, which he refers to as the “Vision for Bitcoin America 2024.” Along with advocating for the election of pro-Bitcoin politicians who can help establish a positive regulatory environment, Suarez urged for the integration of bitcoin into “every aspect of our culture,” including the purchase of ordinary commodities.

Suarez ultimately envisions a collective effort to “unleash bitcoin’s macro power,” which he describes as leveraging the blockchain to break poverty cycles by decoupling it from certain government monetary policies.

“Bitcoin has the potential to democratize and generate wealth for the unbanked and impoverished members of our community who are being destroyed by inflation and uncontrolled government expenditure,” Suarez added.

Suarez made headlines earlier this year when he declared his intention to invest a portion of Miami’s reserves in bitcoin. Miami’s administration has subsequently pushed to position the city as a center for bitcoin and cryptocurrency businesses, an effort that has garnered backing from the state’s governor, Ron DeSantis.
