Scroll upgrades ‘Euclid’ to 90% lower Ethereum layer 2 costs

A noteworthy advancement has occurred in Ethereum’s scaling sphere as Scroll, a recognized Layer 2 network, deployed a significant update known as ‘Euclid.’

This revision, considered the platform’s most crucial protocol development since its mainnet became operational, emerged on Wednesday.

The design aims to significantly reduce transaction expenses, potentially by 90%, while simultaneously enhancing network operational speed and strengthening security structures.

Scroll Introduces Euclid for Major L2 Improvements

The update materializes during a challenging phase for Ethereum’s Layer 2 initiatives, as they grapple with increasing competition from alternative Layer 1 systems like Solana and persist through debates on the success of Ethereum’s rollup-centric scaling model.

Overhauling the ZK-Rollup Architecture

The Euclid enhancement integrates numerous advanced technical improvements, fundamentally altering Scroll’s zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup design.

A key component of this update is the implementation of a novel OpenVM prover, crafted to enhance transaction confirmation efficiency using more streamlined and verifiable code.

This change replaces the old circuit capacity checker, which limited the number of transactions, allowing for much higher processing power.

Concurrently, Scroll is shifting to employ Merkle-Patricia Trie (MPT) for state commitments, bringing it into closer alignment with Ethereum’s inherent structure to boost sequencer productivity and make decentralized application creation simpler for developers.

Integrating New Ethereum and Rollup Proposals

To further augment its functionalities, Scroll’s recent upgrade features compatibility with EIP-7702.

We anticipate that this Ethereum Improvement Proposal will simplify account abstraction, enabling standard Externally Owned Accounts to function similarly to smart contracts.

We expect such a feature to offer enhanced user flexibility via a distinct transaction format.

Supporting this addition is the incorporation of RIP-7212, the initial Rollup Improvement Proposal.

This integration works to elevate security by potentially enabling features like biometric verification methods and extending account abstraction options.

Upgrade Context and Commitment in a Competitive Landscape

Scroll’s recent technological progress follows its governance token distribution event in October.

During this initiative, 7% of the total SCR token supply, representing approximately $77 million, was allocated to the community via an airdrop.

Reports indicated this distribution generated some debate, with criticisms centered on the perception that it excessively favored large stakeholders and individuals using the Binance platform.

Still, the launch of the Euclid upgrade shows that Scroll is committed to enhancing its technology and improving the Ethereum Layer 2 environment as it faces ongoing challenges of lowering costs, increasing speed, and ensuring decentralization in a highly competitive blockchain industry.
